Bone Grafts

About Bone Grafts

Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that involves the addition of bone or bone-like materials to the jawbone in order to repair or rebuild areas of the jaw that have been lost or damaged. The purpose of bone grafting is to provide a stable foundation for dental implants or other restorations, such as bridges or dentures.

There are several different types of bone grafting procedures that can be used in dentistry, including:

Autograft:

This type of bone grafting involves using bone taken from the patient’s own body, such as from other areas of the jaw.

Allograft:

This type of bone grafting involves using bone from a cadaver or a bone bank.

Xenograft:

This type of bone grafting involves using bone from an animal, such as a cow.

Synthetic bone grafting:

This type of bone grafting involves using synthetic materials, such as hydroxyapatite or tricalcium phosphate, to replace lost bone.

The bone grafting procedure is usually done under local anesthesia or IV sedation. A small incision is made in the gum tissue, and the bone or bone-like material is placed into the area where bone is needed. The gums are then sutured closed and the area is left to heal.

After the bone grafting procedure, the patient will need to follow a strict oral hygiene regimen and follow-up with our doctors. Healing times can vary depending on the type of bone grafting procedure performed and the individual case.

Bone grafting can be a successful procedure but there is a risk of complications such as infection, bleeding, or rejection of the grafted material. It’s important to discuss the risks and benefits with our doctors before undergoing the procedure.
