Dr. Ahmed Ismail

Dr. Ismail was trained in Periodontics at the three-year Graduate Periodontics program at the University of British Columbia (UBC), and upon graduation successfully challenged the board exams in both Canada and the United States of America.  Prior to completing his specialization, Dr. Ismail completed UBC’s General Practice Residency (GPR) program based at the Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) where he completed rotations through the hospital’s Plastic Surgery, ENT, BC Cancer Agency and Anesthesia teams.  Dr. Ismail also holds his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree as well as a Bachelor of Science degree from Dalhousie University in Halifax, NS.

The Graduate Periodontics program at UBC is the oldest program in Canada, and has been training world class periodontists since the 1970’s.  During his training there, Dr. Ismail developed his skills in both classical mainstream periodontics as well as the latest techniques in growing fields including the use of platelet-rich plasma to aid in soft issue healing and the use of robotics-based dentistry in implant planning.  Additionally, Dr. Ismail published his Master’s thesis on measurement accuracy in Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) imaging, which is commonly used in dental implant digital planning.  This research is due to be published in the prestigious Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Implants later this year.

Before specializing, Dr. Ismail practiced as a general dentist for four years in Kelowna and Vancouver, providing a balanced range of services in family dentistry.  During that time, he joined UBC as a faculty member for the GPR program and was offered a staff position at VGH to train future residents.  As an active staff at the hospital, Dr. Ismail covers on-call services for trauma and severe facial infections for the Lower Mainland at the VGH emergency department.  In addition, he has hospital privileges at both VGH and UBC hospitals to treat patients in the operating room as needed.  He has been serving in that capacity for 7 years, even during his training as a periodontist. 

Born and raised in Cairo Egypt before immigrating to Canada at the age of 18, Dr. Ismail has always had an appreciation for hard work and a friendly touch.  Furthermore, with his general dentistry and hospital-based background, Dr. Ismail is passionate about the importance of collaboration with his referring colleagues.  His goal is to create a service-centric specialty practice, providing the best service and communication to both his referring doctors and patients.  He is confident that his core values of integrity in everything we do, always putting patients first, treating everyone with empathy, and being on the cutting edge of technology will shine through in all relationships.

Outside of dentistry, Dr. Ismail is an avid traveler. As well as a love for the great outdoors, he enjoys playing a variety of sports including soccer, tennis, and basketball.  Whether you are a referring doctor or a patient, he looks forward to meeting and collaborating with you on a personalized level.
