A. Periodontists specialize in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of gum disease, as well as implant dentistry. A periodontist receives several years of additional training in their specialty after dental school. The periodontists at GumDocs are trained and experienced professionals who regularly perform the restorative procedures needed to improve your smile.
A. An oral and maxillofacial surgeon primarily treats dental and medical conditions that involve the mouth and maxillofacial area. The maxillofacial area includes the forehead, face, and cheekbones, and includes both hard and soft tissue, such as bone and gingiva. Typically, these surgeons perform procedures that treat or correct a multitude of medical or dental conditions. Oral and maxillofacial surgery is considered a dental specialty, although the work involved is usually more complex than what a general dentist does. Maxillofacial surgeons are, in actuality, a combination of a dentist and a medical doctor.
A. A TMJ specialist doctor focuses primarily on the diagnosis and treatment process of patients with Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunctions, or TMD. Most people recognize issues associated with TMD as TMJ, which is an acronym for the joint itself (Temporomandibular Joint). Dentists can receive training for TMJ disorders, and they have a proclivity for identifying causes for TMJ disorders which range from issues with occlusion (how your teeth come together) to issues in the joint itself.
A. There are many reasons to see a periodontist, such as tooth replacement, bone or gum grafts, and the treatment of gum disease. Schedule a consultation if you experience any of the following:
- Tooth sensitivity
- Bleeding, swollen gums
- Receding gums
- Bad breath
- Sores or pain in your mouth
- Recent changes in your bite
