What is a Periodontist?
A periodontist is a dental specialist who has completed an additional two to three years of post-graduate training, following regular dental school. He/she has received training in the treatment of gum disease, gum grafting, esthetic gum surgery, bone grafting and the placement of dental implants to replace missing teeth.
What is an Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon?
An oral and maxillofacial surgeon primarily treats dental and medical conditions that involve the mouth and maxillofacial area. The maxillofacial area includes the forehead, face, and cheekbones, and includes both hard and soft tissue, such as bone and gingiva. Typically, these surgeons perform procedures that treat or correct a multitude of medical or dental conditions. Oral and maxillofacial surgery is considered a dental specialty, although the work involved is usually more complex than what a general dentist does. Maxillofacial surgeons are, in actuality, a combination of a dentist and a medical doctor.
